![]() Verona is probably most famous as the setting of 'Romeo and Juliet'. And yes the city plays up the connection, but it also offers much more than just the chance to stand on the balcony. With a center that preserves the whole history of Italy from Roman times through medieval and Renaissance it's a delight to spend a few hours casually strolling around. The Roman Ampitheatre in the square is the dramatic setting for the Opera Festival which take place every summer. Definitely not to be missed. |
![]() Catania is one of the two main cities on Sicily. At the base of Mount Etna it was completely rebuilt after the eruption in the mid 19th century. The local building material being dark lava, Catania has a unique feel. The blackness of the buildings gives it a dark, almost sinister, feeling at first but it's worth spending some time to explore it. |
![]() Rome, the capitol of Italy since unification in the late 19th century...and once capitol of an Empire that ruled most of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. The reminders of history surround you everywhere here. Yes the great tourist attractions such as the Colosseum and the Vatican are there. But even in some small side street you're likely to run into a piece of history to take the breath away. And one all the more remarkable for being considered a natural part of the landscape by the locals. |
