Once one of the most powerful countries in the world, Portugals discoveries throughout the world resulted in an Empire that encompassed Asia, The Americas and Africa. With those times long faded into the past Portugal went through a long period of impoverishment during the 20th century. Under the dictatorship of Antonio Salazar the country was essentially isolated from the rest of Europe, and stagnated. The revolution of 1974 changed this and was followed by membership of the EU in 1986.
Portugal is now a thriving country and an extremely popular tourist destination destination. Signs of its past glory are everywhere in buildings and traditions making it a perfect destination for anyone interested in history and culture. But with great beaches, weather and golf it also makes a perfect destination for that sun-soaked getaway.

![]() Lisbon, the capital of Portugal is a compact and hilly city. The centre of the city is kown as Baixa and is full of tourists during the day. The original was destroyed during an earthquake in 1755 and is as a result one of the newest sections. Hills rise to either side of the Baixa and these older areas are full of small and narrow streets which it possible to wander through for hours at a time. Bairro Alto in particular is full of small shops, restaurants and bars and at night the streets are alive with people. Alfama is across from Bairro Alto and is still very much a residential area surrounding and inside the walls of Castelo de Sao Jorge. Slightly removed from the city center, Belem is the departure point of the original Voyages of Discovery. The area today is one of parks, cafes and restored buildings which give an idea of the wealth and power of Portugal back then. |
![]() Situated a short distance from Lisbon center, the town of Estoril is a charming seaside destination with beach and promenade just steps from the train station. On the other side of the tracks is a magnificent palm-filled park. The town contains Europes largest casino and is surrounded by golf courses. Nearby is a Formula 1 racing track which hosted Grand Prix until the late 90s. |
